The Power of Pausing: Debriefing for Clinician Sustainability
Witnessing the suffering and distress of patients and families is understandably challenging. Peer-facilitated healthcare debriefings provide time to discuss the impact of the work, normalize reactions, and support resilience across careers. This presentation will review evidence that links debriefing programs to reduced staff attrition and healthier coping, and provide practical steps to design, implement, and evaluate a debriefing program that addresses resistance, secures leadership support, and promotes equity of practice in any setting.

WEBINAR DETAILS
Healthcare clinicians, physicians, nurses, social workers, etc. may experience a variety of emotions related to the work, including sadness, frustration, grief, guilt, or isolation. Peer-facilitated healthcare debriefings offer intentional time for providers to talk about the impacts of the work. This evidence-based strategy normalizes, validates, and supports providers throughout their work and career. This in turn can directly impact the culture and coping strategies of a group, unit, or institution.
This workshop will review the strong evidence that supports debriefing programs and highlight the impact they can have on staff attrition. We will discuss the natural, expectable consequences of working in healthcare and how ongoing debriefings support all staff at any level, any time during their career. We will then move on to discuss how to design, implement, and evaluate a debriefing program. Addressing issues such as institutional resistance, managerial support, and equity of practice, this webinar will leave the participant with a guide to implementing debriefings in their workplace.
